Home of the World's First Green Ban
In 1971, thirteen Hunters Hill women asked the Builders Labourers' Federation to help save the bushland of Kelly's Bush from development. The union imposed the world's first green ban on 17 June 1971, the developer was forced to sell the land to the council, and Kelly's Bush is still a public reserve today.
Australia's Oldest Garden Suburb
Hunters Hill is recognised as Australia's oldest garden suburb, with about 75 per cent of the municipality declared a conservation area. Many early houses were built from local sandstone, some by stonemasons from Italy.
