What Northwood Is Known For
A river suburb with an artistic past and a heritage house.
Named After a Blacket-Designed House
Northwood takes its name from Northwood House, designed by architect Edmund Blacket and built by Jane Davy in 1878. The name described the spot: a wooded area in the north. Mrs Davy also built a ferry at her own expense so her family could travel to the city by water.
Northwood House and Cottage
The house and cottage on Private Road are listed on the NSW State Heritage Register.
A Suburb of Painters
Landscape artist Lloyd Rees lived in Northwood for many years, and many of his later paintings were of the area. Portrait painter William Pidgeon, a three-time Archibald Prize winner, also lived here.
