Local tips
What Crows Nest Is Known For
A cottage with a view, a pioneer cemetery and a brand-new Metro station.
Named After a Cottage With a View
Crows Nest takes its name from the cottage Edward Wollstonecraft built on his 1821 land grant. His business partner Alexander Berry said the name was chosen for its elevated and commanding position. Berry later built a grander Crow's Nest House on the estate in 1850, and its 1880s gates still stand at the Pacific Highway entrance to North Sydney Demonstration School.
The North Shore's First Burial Ground
St Thomas Rest Park on West Street was the first European burial ground on Sydney's North Shore. Alexander Berry rests there in a pyramid-shaped tomb, and the sexton's cottage, dating from around 1850, is now a local history museum.
A Metro Station Since 2024
Crows Nest Metro station opened on 19 August 2024, with entrances on the Pacific Highway and Clarke Street. The suburb is centred on a junction of five main roads.
